Save the World!

This past weekend I watched the controversial documentary, The Cove. For those of you that do not know about the movie it's about this cove in Japan (Taiji) where the Japanese currently kill thousands upon thousands of dolphins yearly. Fisherman go out in their boats and herd the dolphins into the cove, trapping them with nets. They proceed to pick out the ones they want, to sell to companies for $125,000 a pop (wherein the dolphins are held captive) and then kill the rest for meat. Suffice to say the documentary horrified me! The movie points out several issues but the two biggest that I want to relay to you are as follows. 1. Thousands of dolphins are being killed for meat. The problem with this is that the Japanese culture doesn't eat a lot of dolphin meat. In fact, it's rare but the fisherman are telling the inquiring public that it's in their culture to eat dolphin meat. The documentary interviews a lot of Japanese people and we, the viewer, learn t

Amy's Bachelorette Party

This past weekend I helped another girlfriend celebrate her last days of single-dom. Yes, Amy Ko is joining the ranks of married people. It's funny how you meet people in life. Someone comes into your life, say like a Toby, who starts to date the girl who takes his room in a revamped 81st Street after the frat boys left. The girl becomes your roommate's enemy because your roommate used to like that guy but dumped him for another guy. Then Toby and the girl break up and then the girl enemies who both liked the guy become friends because they can relate in their hatrid of that guy who broke their hearts. Then the girl dates a couple of guys and then that girl becomes engaged to her ballroom dancing partner. Yes, life works in mysterious ways. Amy is due to get married October 3 and so my good friend, Caroline, aka one of the frienemies, who is now good friends with Amy, despited Amy trying to one time feed Caroline poison brownies (don't ask) became the Vegas Bachelor

Korean BBQ

A few years ago hubby and I attended one of my vendor's bowling parties at this mom and pop old school bowling alley in Montrose. For these of you wondering where Montrose is it's about 10 minutes north on the 2 freeway. The party was a fun time so we went again and again, as the bowling party was an annual event for my vendor. Was it fate? Anyhow, each year we ended up sitting next to the same couple when it came time to grub on food. And each year we would chat the evening away with the couple. Eventually, someone had the great idea of getting together outside of the bowling party and that is how we meet our friends Verona and Dave. For a few years now, we have been getting together with them and their family. They like to call hubby and I their kids even though they have a daughter near our age and an adopted son who is in college. After hanging out with them so much we kind of feel like part of their family. We even met Verona's mom at a Fake Neil Diamond

"Just A Spoonful of Sugar"

..."helps the medicine go down." When I was little, the only way anyone would be able to get me to take medicine was to sing that Mary Poppin's tune. After making them sing the entire song I would finally take my medicine and all in all, I was a happy little girl. All I can say now is boy, how things have changed! Nowadays I am happy to take any medication to cure my ailments but the new problem seems to be finding a doctor that will actually help me. I have gone to see a lot of doctors, a lot of whom like to prescribe medicine that doesn't help. These doctors are not big on listening apparently. I hate going to doctors who don't listen and who don't help. It is for this reason that I have pretty much sworn them off. However, after suffering for 4 months straight I finally hit my "cave moment" and called my Gynocologist. My Gyno you say? Yes, he is the only doctor I see regularly and whose advice I somewhat trust in other general m

Centered on Food

My life certainly has been centered on food lately! Who knew food could be such a hobby? I guess that's what is has been for me lately. In my quest to catch every food truck in LA I discovered one of my favorite trucks was near the Americana for today's Farmer's Market. So of course I had to go back and try some more of the menu! I dragged hubby out of bed, leashed up Moses and we headed to the Americana for some yummy grub at Baby's Badass Burgers. And boy were they ever Bad Ass! Here are some pics. Read my review on YELP. YELP REVIEW Still a fan of their "juicy" and "cheesy" burgers after catching them a second time at the Americana's Farmers Market this weekend!! We hit the truck about a half hour before it closed and I am glad we did as there wasn't a huge wait. This time around the hubby and I ordered the "Original Beauty" sliders and the "Cougar" sliders. As a side to our meat, we ordered sweet potato fr

Labor Day Party

In honor of Labor Day, the day of rest, we gathered up some friends of brokencandy for a taco party in our hood. We were able to gather Charlie & Kristy fresh back from Seattle, the Krueger, the El Jefe, the Mr. Hinojosa, the Bosgul and the Jungster. We BBQ'd chicken, pork ribs, carne asada, and bacon wrapped asperagus for a yummy feast! By the time it was all over there was a pack made between El Jefe, the male Bosgul, Mr. Hinojosa and Hubby to take part in some real laboring aka PX90, otherwise known as the most hellish workout known to mankind! Those guys are going to be laboring for the next 90 days and I for one am glad it's not me.

The Hollywood Bowl

No summer is complete without a trip to The Hollywood Bowl! And so to fulfill that summer requirement the hub and I took in the John Williams show this past weekend. John Williams if you don't know is a famous movie composer mostly known for his work on the Star Wars films, Indiana Jones films, E.T. and Jaws. Actually those are just a few of his more famous works but really the guy's name can be found in the credits of movie in a ton of movies. John William plays at the Bowl annually but I have never gotten to see him before. I always seem to miss it or let's face it, be lazy about buying tickets in advance. And you have to buy them in advance because his concerts always sell out. This year for my 35th birthday, my 34th surprise was tickets to John Williams at the Bowl. If you haven't been to the Bowl the one thing you should know is that it is synonymous with food or rather, picnicking. We all know my mind has been centered around food lately, so of course

My Favorite Gourmet Trucks

As of last night, I have now tried 18 food trucks! Only 60 more to go! My friends, Krueger and Kristy joined me at 55 Degree Wine in Atwar Village to try the always busy Grilled Cheese Truck! I have run into the truck a few times now but something has always prevented me from trying their food. Mostly the really, really long lines!! This time the hour wait wasn't so bad with two girls to gossip with. By the time we got to the front we were ready to execute our food plan. Kristy took lead and placed an order for 3 sandwiches (the brie, the mac-n-cheese and the rib meat) plus the dessert sandwich and some tator tots!!! I was a bit bummed that they didn't have the sandwich I went for, the Harvest sandwich but the 3 sandwiches we got more than made up for everything. I was glad to try this truck with 2 girls because we split the sandiches in 3rds which was awesome because I got to try a variety of their sandwiches. Now I must add the Grilled Cheese Truck to my list of fa
