One of my friend's girlfriend is the mom behind the popular breastfeeding blog called "The Leaky Boob." Today my friend shared this article about her friend's breastfeeding experiences in Las Vegas. The article had me flabbergasted that even in the city of sin, women are being discriminated against for feeding their child. I mean, for a city that is all about "the boob," it amazes me that people are still offended by women breasting feeding in public especially when that city is as "boob" centric as Las Vegas. Really people? What is so gross about it? Since becoming a mother, I've talked to numerous mom's who either a) have a story to tell about a bad experience of breastfeeding in public or b) have a friend or relative that had a bad experience breast feeding in public. One of my girlfriend's told me they were breastfeeding on an airplane recently and the flight attendant had the gull to ask her or rather, suggest that she would be more comfortable feeding her baby in the bathroom. She politely responded, "That no, she wouldn't be more comfortable feeding her baby in a dirty bathroom." Their conversation went on and became more heated as the attendant, a woman, asked her to please vacate her seat as it was making the surrounding passengers uncomfortable. After a quick survey to find out that wasn't true, an air marshall was called over. He was about to take my friend away until she politely reminded the air marshall that it is an UNLAWFUL of the flight attendant to ask her to breastfeed in the bathroom. As my friend was telling me this story, I shuttered in disbelief that today, in 2013, people are still freaked out by breasts. Doesn't matter that they like to go to Vegas and rub up against them but if a mom pulls her out then it's disgusting? One of the mom's in my neighborhood mom group actually had to switch departments recently because her boss (a woman and a mother) was giving her an really hard time about pumping at work. That took me by surprise since you would think this woman would be understanding since she was a mother herself. I only breast feed for a short amount of time and I didn't have the chance to do it in public but I can assure you its the most natural thing in the world and I didn't have a second thought of whipping out my boob in front of other people. Considering that most people on this planet have had sex and know where babies come from, I ask you what is the problem? It's just a boob....You would think people would like seeing them as they are generally bigger when breastfeeding and isn't that what people fantasize about? Bigger boobs?
As a little girl I would look on my mom’s arm and wonder why she had such a weird mark near her shoulder. A few days ago, as the warm solution penetrated my bloodstream, I started to cry remembering my mom’s mark. The nurse asked me if I was okay and I told her I was so incredibly happy. As a diabetic I was stressed never knowing if I was doing enough to avoid it but also, keeping some semblance of life in doing outdoor things. I cried because I am incredibly grateful to the SCIENCE that made this possible in only a year. Less time for me to worry about my only kiddo should the worse happen. If ur on the fence...I’ve worked in entertainment for over 20 years and I’ve seen first hand how easy celebrities influence the public. Some do good and others well...I’m happy to have a little bit of the gracious Dolly Parton with me. Scientists on the other hand, very rarely get the recognition for their years of study, years of research and expertise contributing to (wo)mankind....
