Well, this winter vacation has turned out a bit disappointing, as all three of us got sick. Penny has had a runny nose for a few weeks now. When we took her in for her one year check up on Dec 13th, the doc prescribed a 10 day antibiotic to clear up the mucus in her nose. Wouldn't you know it, after the 10 days she contracted another cold and this one was worse!
In between the first and second colds, Papa got sick. Then on top of Penny's second cold, she had a pretty bad reaction to some vaccination shots she received. We were warned that in about 15% of kids who get the chicken pox vaccination that a little break out with red dots is possible. We were told usually it's just a few but Penny's whole body was covered! Add in an ear infection and you have one miserable baby over Christmas! (Luckily, she still had some fun in opening presents and general holiday cheer.)
We headed to Sanger for the holidays on Dec 22 after hubby's birthday lunch at his favorite, Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. We had met up with Caroline, Minh and Jung for a fun lunch. We meant to do a little traveling during our Sanger trip or a little adventuring but we ended up heading home the evening of the 26th because Penny and I were just plain sick and that left Daddy with not much to do.
While it was nicer to be sick at home, we were still sick, so while we found energy for an hour or two, it always depleted and we found ourselves wrapped up in blankets and taking a lot of naps. We thought the cold would never end so we took Penny to the doctor on Friday, the 28th and he prescribed a second antibiotic. This time a 5 day one. Penny and I (no antibiotic) finally started to feel better yesterday afternoon aka near the end of our vacation.
All I can say is, "Oh, well!" Even though I was sick most of my winter break I did enjoy my moments with Penny, hubby and Moses. It wasn't perhaps the most exciting vacation but I guess in hindsight, I am relaxed and glad for the moments I had with my family.
As a little girl I would look on my mom’s arm and wonder why she had such a weird mark near her shoulder. A few days ago, as the warm solution penetrated my bloodstream, I started to cry remembering my mom’s mark. The nurse asked me if I was okay and I told her I was so incredibly happy. As a diabetic I was stressed never knowing if I was doing enough to avoid it but also, keeping some semblance of life in doing outdoor things. I cried because I am incredibly grateful to the SCIENCE that made this possible in only a year. Less time for me to worry about my only kiddo should the worse happen. Some do good and others well...I’m happy to have a little bit of the gracious Dolly Parton with me.
