Turns out I wasn't the only person in my hood who had a baby recently. Thanks to my social loving dog, Moses, I was able to meet other dog lovin mommas who had just given birth to their first human babies.
Like me, they we're just as bewildered by the new responsibilities of having a baby at an older stage in life. So we all came up with the brilliant idea of forming a monthly group where we talk about our experiences and give our babies a chance to play.
Yesterday, I hosted the third meet up. I wasn't sure anyone would come but by 430pm there were 5 moms and 5 babies talking about everything from breast feeding to daycare to poopy diapers. I ended up having a great time and so did Penny, who couldn't believe how many babies were playing with "her" toys!
Even though its a neighborhood mom group, I invited a mom friend from work who had expressed interest in finding a good mom group. Since I was hosting I didn't think the other moms would mind. In fact, in the two previous meet ups different moms showed up so it wasn't like we have an exclusive club. What I like about our group is that one mom knows of a another mom and that mom comes. Basically you never know who is going to show up! The only constants so far is me, Alicia, and Karla. This time a new mom that couldn't make the last two meet ups came. Sian, is a mom from the UK who finds herself transported to the USA due to her husband's transfer to Warner Bros in the US. She was quite interesting to listen to as there is quite a few differences between medical care in the US vs in the UK. Plus, she was the only mom with two kids, a boy and a girl, so of course all of us one kid moms had to know what it was like to have two kids.
She also seemed to be the only mom who didn't also have a full time job so we were all eager to know how in the world she manages to stay home all day. The answer was she used to be a school teacher and for her, staying home is a lot easier then being with a classroom of kids! We all laughed.
Like me, most of the moms in the group, we're older when they had their first babies, so there's a real connection and common understanding between all of us. I quite like all the ladies. We never have a set agenda, we just sort of talk and topics come out over the course of the babies playing, feeding or being diapered.
I hope mommy group continues as it would be nice for Penny to have kids in our neighborhood to play with. Plus, it is just plain nice to talk with other women who understand what you are feeling.
Man, I owe a lot to my dog Moses. Not only is he a great companion but he continues to make sure hubby, Penny and I have companionship within our community!
