Continued from last post...
After being in recovery for 2 hours I was wheeled up to my room on the 4th floor of St. Joe's. The theme of the 4th floor was "It's A Small World" as opposed to the baby Dumbo theme of the Labor and Delivery 3rd Floor. I won't lie, I wasn't feeling like I could run a marathon. But luckily for me, I was recovering from my emergency c-section quicker than ladies who elect c-sections in the first place.
Apparently, since I had already had an epidural, the drugs used during my c-section were different from the ones they use for a scheduled c-section. The ladies who schedule c-sections take a lot longer to recover. My recover room nurse was surprised I could move my legs so quickly after surgery until she found out I had had an epidural. I guess it takes ladies 24 hours to be able to move their legs around after the surgery. Despite having the function of my legs back two hours after surgery I stills wasn't feeling all so hot.
When I got to my room I expected to meet my daughter. But I learned front he nurse that Penelope was taken to NICU because she stopped breathing while in the nursery. I immediately freaked but the nurse was quick to assure me that this happens to babies all the time and its a precautionary measure. I calmed down but was disappointed to learn I wouldn't be able to immediately see my daughter. I had already waited 2 hours after only seeing her for a brief 2 minutes, I thought. The nurse told me that there was a chance they could bring her to my room in a few hours after some observation.
I relied on hubby to take photos and to be with her, the first few hours of her life. When I finally got to see hubby again later that morning, he didn't have good news. He informed me that they were about to bring Penelope to my room after spending a few hours in NICU but she stopped breathing again, so they ordered her to stay for observation for 24 hours. My heart sank. I asked the nurse if I could be wheeled down to NICU but she said they couldn't do that because of my IVs and the antibiotics I had to have for 24 hours. Here, I just went through the most painful and emotional experience of m life and I didn't even get to see the end result! Suffice to say, I was bummed.
Knowing I couldn't see my daughter I focused on rest, well, sort of, I was actually focused on my intense hunger! I hadn't eaten since Sunday morning and I was starving!! I was again disappointed to learn from the nurse that I couldn't eat anything right away, probably not until 6pm later that day. WHAT!!?? Apparently when you have surgery you get a lot of bas inside of your stomach and they advise not eating anything because you will throw up or aggravate the gas. At that point my starvation was immense and I was willing to throw up just to get something to eat!
When noon o'clock came around a lady entered my room with a big plate of food and on that plate was a big piece of chocolate cake, exactly what I had been craving for months. I was about to dig in when hubby said "You better check with the nurse." Bummer I said. I checked with the nurse and she said sorry you can't have that food and took the plate of food away. I was devastated. How fair is it that they wave a huge plate of food in front of someone who is starving and then pull it away. It was like some cruel joke! About 5 minutes later the "food lady" brings in the first tray of food and asks hubby if he would like it. Hubby who is starving as well jumped at it and then stopped and looked at me. "Go ahead, I say." Somebody should eat I thought. A minute later another tray of food comes in but it's all liquid based. The "food lady" apologized for the liquidness of the food but I didn't care. "I get to eat this?" I said. Yep the "food lady" says. Let me tell you, miso soup, lemon sorbet, and cranberry juice never tasted so good!
I rested up the bulk of the afternoon and of course, fielded many phone calls and posted several pictures. During a short afternoon nap, I was awaken by a messenger who was carrying a box. After signing my name, I opened the box to find a dozen cupcakes! Just what I was craving!! I so wanted to dip into them but I knew I had to wait 3 more hours for hard food so I put them to the side and read the note. My friend, Rebe who has four kids had sent me cupcakes. It was a most awesome gift! After two months of eating no sugar I couldn't wait to dip into a big box of sugar goodness!
The remainder of the afternoon was spent taking visitors from the hospital staff. I had visits from a lactate consultant who came and taught me how to pump, a breathing consultant who gave me this breathing toy I was to use 10 times a day until I left the hospital (because your lungs need to get a work out after surgery) and a bevy of nurses coming in to check my iv, the weird pump thing on my legs (to prevent blood clotting), changing various pieces of bedding and changing my pee bag.
At 5pm the "food lady" came to my room with a big plate of food. This time I didn't ask if i could eat the food, I just ate it! Then I shared two cupcakes with hubby (the mint chocolate chip cupcake we tried first tasted absolutely divine!) My night nurse came in and told me I was okay to eat solids. I said "Good, cuz, I just devoured the tray they brought and two cupcakes!" She smiled and said be careful.
After dinner hubby left to go pick up Moses who spent his first overnight at his daycare. He came back later that night to be with me, such a sweet hubby and he passed out on the couch that was in my room. He was visibly tired after being up with me all night, being with Penelope all morning and hanging out with me all afternoon. I just wanted to kiss him and give him an award for being such a sweet and attentive hubby. In hard times, he was one hubby who could be counted on!
