The thing about being pregnant in the year 2011 is that you have access to too much technology and too much information. Back in the day, a pregnant lady didn't have ultrasounds, sonograms, access to the Internet, pregnant lady forums with other pregnant woman giving 24 hour feedback on their progression. Nope, most times a lady didn't know they were pregnant until they missed a few periods or until they felt weird kicks in their stomachs. Now days you have home pregnancy test that can tell you if you have conceived days after you did the deed. Now you have access to sonograms so that you can see the little fetus growing inside of you. Now you have access to a ton of books that tell you what is good and what is not. Really, there is so much information out there you could scare yourself to death with all of it. One woman may post on the forum, I am 16 weeks and feel my baby kick all the time. If you are 18 weeks and haven't felt any kicks, you begin to wonder if there is something wrong. If you read you are not supposed to drink caffeine but you read on a forum that woman are drinking it by the gallons you immediately wonder if what you are doing is right or wrong. Basically, having access to all this information can drive an already crazy woman even more crazy!!! I swear sometimes I think those ladies on the forum are insane, then I remember I am just like them!
Anyhow, this past weekend I began to feel little spasms on the bottom right hand corner of my abdomen. I'd get one or two and they would go away. But by Monday the spasms increased in frequency to the point of being constant. This worried me. So I called my doctor. Who basically said I need to rest and I need to stop walking my dog up a strenuous hill and that I should probably cut my mile and half walk down a bit. The people at work managed to convince me to go home to rest and that is when I got on the Internet and started some research. normally I am not a self diagnosis kind of person but when I typed in the words pregnancy, twinges, flutters I was taken to the WebMD site to a page call ROUND LIGAMENT PAIN. What it described was what I seemed to be feeling. It said that it was normal for the uterus to grow and tip towards the right hand side of the body during 16-24 week period. It said said the twinges or pain might be exacerbated by exercise (then I thought about the gardening and the dog walking)an then it said be worried if it is constant and bunch of other symptoms. Well, the only symptom from the list was the constant. Luckily it also provides some remedies to help. The first one said heating pad. I didn't think a heating pad on a pregnant tummy was good so I went to the second suggestion which was warm bath. So I filled the tub up and hoped in and relaxed to music for an hour. I must admit that was the nicest soak I have had in a while! It even cured my aching legs. The spasms seemed tos top in the tub so I got out and then did the next thing which was lay on your side, but oppose the side of the pain. So I did that for an hour. Then I pretty much stayed on the couch.
I woke up feeling better but I can't help but be worried. I read the pregnant lady forum everyday and while most time its helpful to read about woman going through simular experiences its not so helpful to read about two different ladies going into preterm labor at 18 weeks. I jsut so happened to read those posts and now I am secretly fretting that perhaps those twinges were contractions and I am about t go into labor at any minute.
While technology allowed me to self diagnose and find out things to make my twinges go away, technology also made me more worried when I read about the preterm labor stories. I am still not quite sure if technolody is good thing or not. Anyhow, I am spending all day today drinking a ton of water because one of the symptoms for preterm labor is dehydration. Add to it I read a post about a lady eating sushi, which I thought wasn't a good thing to do and all this information is just driving me insane!
