I have been kind of slacking on my personal Food Truck Race of late because my Yelp buddy hit 50 trucks in a breeze. Yesterday, however, I somehow managed to eat both lunch and dinner at food trucks. We tried Onolicious, a new Hawaiian truck that was at Verdugo Bar and then later that evening, we received a tweet that Grill Em All, the winner of the real food truck race was going to be at Eagle Rock Brewery. In between the truckin' we managed to do some shopping for our upcoming, first ever, Thanksgiving meal with our family at our house!
Onolicious only had 5 reviews on Yelp and the reviews ranged from two 4-stars to two 2-stars to finally, a lonely, 1-star review. The reviews were mixed so we didn't have any idea of what we were getting ourselves into. We showed up at our local pub at about 2:30 in the afternoon. Normally there are quite a few people at the bar either in line or grabbing a beer but the public must not know much about Onolicious because other than a birthday party of 10 people, there was no one at the bar. The Onolicious Truck is pretty plain in looks. Think white truck with no design. Maybe after they make some money they will add some graphics to their truck? From a marketing perspective this would help their cause. With no pictures of menu items and no graphics it could be just another truck on the street. The food truck phenomenon is in fact a phenomenon because its a bunch of chefs with their gourmet ideas going to the streets hawking their gourmet food treats. If you are not going to bring your gourmet or your a-game then please don't dilute my food truckin' experience. I am just sayin'.
With nothing really to entice us visually we walked up to the truck and looked at their hand written menu. The Hub quickly found what he was going to order (Loco Moco) and I had more difficulty. I had no idea what I would order. I himmed and I hawed for about 5 minutes. Then hubby placed an order for his Loco Moco and I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki plate. 5 minutes after we ordered we go back to get some Hawaiian drinks. The totally meal cost $16.
When our food was ready, hubby was presented two McDonald's sized Big Mac containers. At first I was a bit shocked that my $16 meal came in the size of a Big Mac container but upon opening the the container there was a hearty meal inside. Hubby's looked like the following:
My teriyaki plate lunch looked like this:
We dug into our containers and found the food to be good but nothing special We have been to Hawaii a million times so we know what an amazing plate lunch is supposed to taste like and unfortuantely, this meal was not up to that standard but what do you expect? It's not like we are in Hawaii! I would add a little more terriyaki to my plate lunch. The rice was great, the macaroni salad was mild. If you like super sweet aka a lot of mayonaise you might not like this version which is a tad bland (but I liked it).
The Hawaiian drinks were awesome because they are straight from Hawaii. Overall I would have to rate this truck 3 stars other wide known as good but not something that is chaseworthy.
