Adventure in the 714

Last night the hubby and I headed down south to Seal Beach to celebrate our friend, Kristy's birthday. You might remember I already celebrated Kristy's Birthday a month ago at Club 33 at Disney aka her "Fake Caroline Birthday" but alas time has caught up and we have made it to her real birthday. Kristy and her husband, Charlie moved back to California recently from Seattle. She had been finishing up her doctorate, yes, she is a smarty, in Marine Biology, up in Seattle. They had been living up there for 3-4 years. After graduating this past spring they wanted to get back to LA since Charlie wants to produce movies, so they moved back to Southern California (they originally hail from Iowa in case you are wondering).

She was offered a swell job at UCLA doing research and was due to be our neighbor in Eagle Rock but the very week of the move, the professor at the lab at UCLA said she didn't have a job anymore. WTF right? She had a signed contract and everything, yet no job! Talk about a sucky situation to be in! Suffice to say, there was a a lot of scrambling that week and she ended up taking two part time jobs in labs that were far out east, as in Palm Springs East, as in Fontana. In fact, I can't even tell you where Fontana is that is how far away it is.

Despite the distance, hubby and I have seen a lot of Charlie and Kristy lately which is due in fact to Krueger. Kruger, is a mutual friend of ours, who's currently between jobs. Why is this important? It's important because that is the only time anyone sees her is when she is in between jobs. Anyways, we teasingly refer to Krueger as Charlie's second wife. See all those years that Kristy was in school she couldn't go to a lot of events so Charlie and Krueger went to a lot of events together hence the wife reference. But don't worry Charlie and Krueger are just friends and I so happened to put the 3 of those guys together when I told Charlie, who was working with me at AMC at the time, about some jobs Krueger was hiring for. You see she worked in TV Production and Charlie just so happened to want to get into production. To say, that Charlie, Kristy and Krueger hit it off is an understatement. Anyhow, Charlie and Kristy are now two more people enlisted in the "taking care of Krueger because she secretly needs it club."

So I digress...Anyhoo, Charlie and Kristy who seem to be stuck in FUNTUCKY, as that is what the residents of Fontana call themselves, are making the best of their situation and have been doing a lot of driving to LA to see us, their friends. However, when it's one birthday you are allowed to make people drive to you, so that is what we did last night....we drove to Kristy. However, seeing as it was Kristy's birthday and she didn't want to be in Funtucky but rather Seal Beach, we charted our course to the beach instead of out east instead. Our destination, the end of the pier and dinner at Ruby's, a 50's type dinner.

Since the hubby and I rarely go out of the 818 we set out with what we think are directions in hand. However, we get to talking (because we don't see each other all week) and we completely miss our exit. With no GPS and no blackberry and us driving south on the 5 we had no idea how to get over to Seal Beach. Luckily I had my iTouch which really wouldn't have been any help except that it had Charlie's phone number in it. Luckily hub brought his phone and I was able to call Charlie and cry for help. Now an amazing thing happened that night. Charlie was able to give me directions to get to Seal Beach and even more amazing they were correct, and even more amazing, me, who is directionally challenged was able to take those directions and communicate them to the driver and even more amazing, find our way to the Pier. This has never happened to me before in my life!

Now when Kristy said Ruby's was at the end of the pier we didn't know that pier was in Hawaii! Apparently the Seal Beach Pier is a super long walk! I hadn't brought a coat so it was a bit breezy. My gentleman hubby gave me his coat. We arrived late but we arrived before Krueger which is always a good thing. Everyone had ordered their food and was just receiving it when we arrived. We were able to order our food and eat it before Krueger arrived at the very end. Oh Krueger! Anyhoo, we couldn't give her shit that night because of our lateness. At Ruby's was a small gathering of Kristy's friends and a small group of Charlie/Krueger/Kristy/our friends aka the group of people we all meet through Krueger. There that night were Jayne Jay and Ellen. Jayne Jay has been running half marathons and Ellen is preparing to go to Spain, ole! But she has no plans yet. Um better get to it Ellen you leave in three weeks!

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
