The Surprise That Got Busted!

BUST is a Jungism

So every October there is a Trifecta of Birthdays. There is Jung’s, Matthew’s and Caroline’s all on the 7th, 9th and 10th. Just like in May there is Jeff and Jon’s birthdays which are one day apart. It makes it very hard to properly celebrate each person’s birth when they are so close together.

The only person out of the five mentioned above that doesn’t usually have some kind of celebratory event is Jung. So this year, as Toby, Danielle and I were driving back from Vegas we thought it would be nice to throw Jung a surprise party. The topic came up because we all had received Matthew’s birthday invitation and we got to talking about birthdays and wondered what Jung was doing.

It just so happened that Toby had previously asked all of us to hang out on Oct 2 so we thought this would be the perfect date to surprise Jung whose birthday is on the
7th. So there in began a bunch of emails of what to do, who to invite and where to do it at. We ultimately decided on the House of Blues Foundation Room A) because most people had never been there (I have... because if it is exclusive I have to go! Hehe) B) there was a $100 voucher on restaurant.com. So Danielle purchased the gift certificate and Toby did the corresponding and I was prepared to decorate!

So come Friday evening our plan to surprise Jung was in jeopardy because the surprisee was sick with the flu. Well, he was recovering but still sick. So Saturday we did a lot of “is it happening?” “Should I buy favors?” You know the usual questions when you realize your plan might not work. So by 4pm we decided on a new plan. Meet at an Italian Restaurant in the WestSide and we would decide from there where to eat. I thought it was weird to meet at a restaurant only to go somewhere else but whatever, I went with the flow. Me and the hub were the first to arrive at Cantalini's so we sat out by the valet bench with our big surprise birthday balloon. That is when this girl, who we learned to be the hostess, asks if we have reservations. Not wanting to hurt her feelings (in case we didn't eat there) I sort of was vague with the my information.

She asked how many people were in my party and I had no idea since the plans had changed so I said 12 because that was our original RSVP number. The hostess cringed and said they were full but was super persistent in asking me to find out the real number. It was really weird how she persisted. Thinking what else was I going to do, I call Danielle and asked how many we were expecting.

The hostess returns to the valet bench and I tell her 8-9 people. She claps and says she just so happens to have a free spot cuz a large party left early. This is when I have to tell her that I am not sure we will eat there. (meanwhile thinking how do I get myself into these things?) I tell her and she didn't seem to mind she might be wasting her time. Luckily within 5 minutes Montez, Danielle, Toby and Jon showed up. I told them about the persistant hostess and pondered outloud about it being Saturday and seeing as we had a table it might seem silly if we go elsewhere, especially with our large party. They agreed and we tell the hostess we will take that table.

From there the hostess seats us immediately and then a waitress comes over and asks about our occasion and we tell her we are surprising our friend. The restaurant people seemed excited and got us situated immediately. I was surprise that the staff seemed excited by the situation (nice). Birthday boy Jung and Matthew show up and we surprise the heck out of the birthday boy.

A lot of us were bummed we didn't get to go to the House of Blues but you know, we had a really great time at the Italian restaurant so at the end of the day it didn't matter. What mattered was that we sure did surprise Jung. Matthew got him there on the surmise that Toby had a big announcement. I won't tell you what they thought that announcment would be though. A lot of us were doing P90X and the staff helped us find healthy options. At the end of the night they gave Jung a tasty tiramisu dessert which was so good Regul had to order it and break his diet. Looks like Jon will be watering those plants for Danielle this week (they have a bet regarding Jon’s weight each week). For a place we weren't planning on visiting, the restaurant really impressed me. Maybe I will have to go visit Jung more often so I can have more meatballs! Yum!

After dinner we grabbed some drinks at a bar called Mo’s. Had a rude waitress who informed us we must order drinks from her and not the bar. That made us leave so we went back to Regul’s house minus the tired and still sick Jung and had a great time hanging around the butcher block that no one is allowed to cut on (there is a cutting board on top of the butcher block) nor that anyone is allowed to leave wet glasses that might make stains on.

Here are some pictures.

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
