Sometimes You Want To Go

...Where everybody knows your name...

And you know where that place is? Well, like the popular TV show CHEERS, it's the bar! Yes, my local bar is getting to know my credit card. I am not one to hang out in bars a lot. Well, not since my swinging Burbank days....back when I was an assistant and stayed out all night and came to work with blood shot eyes and a hour of sleep...you know, back in the days of my 20's. So for me to be at the bar once is a feat but twice in the same weekend is pretty darn amazing! I walked in on Sunday and the barkeep gal said
"Hey, blondie. Weren't you here yesterday?" "Uh, hah!" I reply.
So how did I get to the bar 2 times in one weekend? It was one part foodie, one part beer pong and one part girlfriend.

FOODIE: On my quest to becoming a foodie, I have found that there is more to life than McDonald's. Gasp. I know this is a crazy thing to say considering I was eating McD's since I was a wee wee girl. But yes, in fact, I have discovered there is more to life than "chain" place when it comes to satisfying one's palette. As I look back on my 35 years I find the evolution of my eating interesting. For the first 21 years of m life I was a "chain" gang gal. Yep, when I first came to Cali I would only eat at chain restaurants. It was so apparent that my pal, Jeff Daly would tease me and say, "Don't you eat anything else than chain food?" That pissed me off as it seemed like he was implying I was doing a bad thing. But I didn't know any better cuz that is what I grew up on. It's not like Haslett, MI is a food mecca of the world. So how was I suppose to know that there was more to life than Chili's? Then I met the hubby and we went to mom and pop places which I found to be a nice break from Whoppers and Nacho Grandes. Nowadays, as I enter the maturity of adulthood I am finding myself immersed in fine dining. You know the kind you pull out a Benjamin or two for. Oh, how times have changed! I went from $2.99 combo meals to muffins that cost $200 buckaroos. This summer with my constant review writing courtesy of YELP, I have really started to pay attention to food. I find myself not only wanting food but finding new ways to experience it and finding people (chefs) who really know what they are doing in a kitchen. So now, not only do I take pictures of food but I sit and ponder what I just ate and why it was so delectable.

BEER PONG: Thank to Twitter I have become a "follower" of many things. One of them is the Verdugo Bar. I also follow LA Food Trucks. So on Saturday when I saw that the Verdugo Bar was hosting Food Trucks, games and drink specials I hauled hubby out the house to the bar to partake in the Dumpling Station and those "games" which turned out to be a bunch of board games and two beer pong tables. So that day at the local dive bar, not only was I introduced to the game of Beer Pong but to the game of Jenga. Of the two, the later was the more enjoyable. I mean how fun is it to try and build a tower of bricks with a good buzz? The beer pong, didn't look like a tremendous amount of fun, as played by other 20& 30 something yuppies at the bar who had really bad aim and had to take a "sip" of beer when they missed. A sip?

PART GIRLFRIEND: On Sunday while the hubby hung out with boys, I had a girlie day with one of my gal pals. She came over and I once again found myself hanging out at the Verdugo Bar. On Sunday there was a band, even more food trucks and even more shouts of "You never played Jenga before" ...as quoted by hubby the day before. Even though I had gone the day before it was a different experience.

When I was in my 20's I used to go to the bar to get drunk, now a days, I go to the bar to see what kind of weird beer I can order (this weekend it was the white rascal) or what food truck will be there. The hanging out part is still the same as in the 20's but I am enjoying the taste of the beer a little bit more.

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

My Favorite Gourmet Trucks

As of last night, I have now tried 18 food trucks! Only 60 more to go! My friends, Krueger and Kristy joined me at 55 Degree Wine in Atwar Village to try the always busy Grilled Cheese Truck! I have run into the truck a few times now but something has always prevented me from trying their food. Mostly the really, really long lines!! This time the hour wait wasn't so bad with two girls to gossip with. By the time we got to the front we were ready to execute our food plan. Kristy took lead and placed an order for 3 sandwiches (the brie, the mac-n-cheese and the rib meat) plus the dessert sandwich and some tator tots!!! I was a bit bummed that they didn't have the sandwich I went for, the Harvest sandwich but the 3 sandwiches we got more than made up for everything. I was glad to try this truck with 2 girls because we split the sandiches in 3rds which was awesome because I got to try a variety of their sandwiches. Now I must add the Grilled Cheese Truck to my list of fa...

Surfing Goat Diary

We left the store and headed to the Surfing Goat Diary, again, this was a second trip for us but what was different this time is that we scheduled an hour long tour. Last time we arrive right before closing and were rushed. We spent a fair amount of time there exploring before the tour. We tried their cheesecake, we met the cats and dogs that roamed the place, we played in the playground, we pet and fed the baby goats that were penned up, and pursued the little store. Penny was eager to get her hands on the chocolate goat milk truffles. I must admit they did look good. I had my eyes on a t-shirt and a mug. Our tour started at 3:30pm that day and we met all the goats and learned all about the farm. But the most exciting part of the tour was getting the opportunity to milk the goats. Penny was quite a good milker. A friend later reminded me that Penny was breastfed (wink, wink). By the time the tour ended we were extremely hot. Maui was hot but also humid. We were ready to...
