My Visit to STREET

My recent review on YELP.

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of dining at Street, a restarant that foodies may know because of Chef Susan Feniger who appeared on the TV show Top Chef Masters. Located in a very nondistinct brick building on Highland I almost drove past it! After finding parking on the street I met my party of 4 inside and were seated. Shortly after arriving the place filled up. The inside is small but very hip with modern decoration. You can choose to sit inside or outside on a patio. As it was a whopping 100 degrees our party stayed inside. The inside isn't overly large so I would really suggest making a reservation ahead to insure you get seated.

The first thing we noticed on the table was a small round dish containing what can best be desribed as Curry Rice Krispie Treats. Round in size the krispy balls almost looked like a woman's braclet sitting there in the dish. Of course we were immediately intriged. I am not so much a fan of curry so ultimately, I didn't like this item but the minute I bit into it there was an explosion of flavor. There were many layers and textures to this treat and although I didn't like the curry flavor I did enjoy the ride.

Our waiter brought us a fun looking "book" which was the menu. Although the menu was a "book" it wasn't overly filled with choices (like Cheesecake Factory). Instead this book was comprised of 3 pages of items. There was about 5-7items per section (drinks, appy's, entrees and salads. So getting through the menu wasn't that hard. Our waiter came by and gave us suggestions as to what was popular. The first thing we started with was drinks and you are going to want to pay attention to the non-alcholic drinks as they have some wonderful sounding choices. I am basically an ice tea drinker but I couldn't pass up the lemonade. The waiter asked me if I liked tart and I was like "Order it up!!" When I got the drink, I didn't think it was overly tart and enjoyed it very much. Two of us ordered the lemonade and then two of us ordered the ice tea (with a twist) and after tasting each other drinks I think the 4 of us were happy with our selections. Another thing to point out is that if you enjoy tea you will be happy to know they have a whole menu just for teas.

After the drinks were taken care of we moved on to appy's. Between the waiter, the hostess and 4 girls we decided to order 3 appy's. We ordered the Dumpling Sampler which featured 3 items: the spinach varenyky (Ukraine), mandoo vegetable dumplings (Asia), and the shrimp stuffed Shitake mushrooms. We also ordered the Kaya Toast which was toasted bread w/ coconut jam, served with a soft fried egg, & drizzled in dark soy/white pepper. The final appy was the Hawaiian Ono Sashimi with spicy sesame mayonnaise, yuzu ponzu sauce, smoked salt, pink peppercorns and micro wasabi. Each appy was smallish. The Dumpling Sampler had a total of 6 items so we split each in have so we could each try a bite. The toast was a sandwich that came already precut in 4 slices & the sashimi had 4 slices as well. I can not tell you how much fun we all had trying those items. Once again, that explosion of flavor took foot and we were all trying to guess what kind of spices were put in each dish. It was the groups conclusion that the Kaya Toast was absolutely amazing! The dumpling sampler was our second favorite & lastly & surprisingly the sushi. The ono sushi was super fresh. Upon first bite it was awesome but I am not sure I liked the ending aka the peppercorn.

For the entrees we decided to order 5 items to split because from our waiter's description we thought everything was going to be super small. But we would have been fine if we didn't share as the items were bigger than expected, except for the salad. When the food came we only received 4 entrees. I guess the waiter misunderstood our order. I was super bummed beacuse I didn't get to try the Vietnamese Pull Pork Sliders which I selected. Even though he offered to get the missing item we were full by the time he came over to check on us. The 4 entrees we tried were: the Bermese Melon Salad, Brioche Cheeseburger, Braised Beef Tacos, and the Falafel Wrap. I think the girl who ordered the melon salad was glad she was sharing because the salad was very tiny. Of the 4 items, the table favorites were the cheeseburger and the tacos. I am not sure what they do to that cheeseburger but it has a kick and a really good one. We all devoured our sections of cheeseburger in seconds. The same was true with the tacos.

We pretty much forgot to save room for dessert but in the spirit of sharing we ordered the Egyptian Basbousa Cake which had some amazing berries and lime curd but we wished we would have tried the Chocolate Cake. Oh well, next time, right!? My final assessment: if you are a foodie who enjoys an international flavor then a trip to this place is a must!

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
