Three Movie Weekend

I was preparing myself for rain and what we got was sun and heat. Either way the weather rolled I was heading to the movies and boy did I ever see a lot of movies this weekend! First up was "The Time Travelers Wife', next "Inglorious Basterds" and finally "District 9." The hub's been working Saturday's so I thought I take this last Saturday (cuz he is done with his gig this Friday) to go see a chick flick. There are actually 4 chick flicks I need to see ("Time Travelers", "The Ugly Truth", "Julie & Julia" and "500 days of Summer"). Rather than draggin' the hubby to see something he will hate, I decided to catch up on my cheesy goodness on my own. However, Time Traveler's was neither good nor cheesy. It was kinda just dark and a big downer. I heard this film was a book and perhaps it should have stayed that way. I can only imagine in the book there was more opportunity for dialogue and internal conflict because I never was fully clued in on why this was happening to this guy and the little clue that it was in his DNA seemed just too stupid. They never even explained why he went were he did or how he ended up in some other places. I can forgive a lot of stupid stories in movies if you just tell me why even if it can't happen in reality. I just want your explanation as to why it would work in the film's reality. That's all. So really film one was a bust. Film two...You can pretty much expect to be entertained whenever you go to a Tarantino film cuz you can totally appreciate how much this guy is a movie buff. I mean everything from the way the scenes are set up to the soundtrack is different. He's one guy who has fun with film. I enjoyed this movie but I wouldn't rate it as Tarantino's best work however, the first chapter of the film was very good. My husband and I agreed that we found it to be too funny. What you say? Funny is supposed to be good right? Well... normally his movies are witty-funny but this time some of the laughs were just too easy. A good film but not at the same level as "Kill Bill" and "Death Proof" which I consider masterpieces! Third up was "District 9". All I knew about this film was that was the movie keeping Peter Jackson's crew busy every time we call to try and get something for our movie approved. That and I heard it was about Aliens. Was it me or did this film seemed to come out of nowhere? At a film festival one day and in the movie theatres the next. I didn't know what to expect of this film and I almost didn't go cuz I thought this was one of those that the hubby should see on his own. About 30 minutes in I wished I stayed home. This just wasn't my cup of tea. Very violent. Now this isn't to say this was a bad film. I can appreciate good film and still hate it. And that was the case here. I simply wasn't the target audience for this film. Although I must say I enjoyed the later half a lot better than the first half. I can see how all the guys around me have been saying they love it. For a sci-fi flick it offers something different. It just isn't the film for me. So that was my weekend. Movie time at the local AMC. My Costco tickets and MovieWatcher card got a good workout!

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
