San Diego Birthday

About a week before my birthday hubby asks me if I want to go away for my birthday. We went back and forth on a few locations before San Diego was selected. I haven't been to San Diego in years but I sort of felt like i had done it before because I had been a few times. But I agreed and hubby booked a hotel in downtown San Diego at The Westgate Hotel. A few days before the trip I did some research because I did not want to go to the same places I had been before. After hubs got out of work on Friday night he came home to a packed car. I had already taken Moses to boarding for the weekend (tear, tear) and we were ready to go once he got home. We managed to evade the 5 and took other freeways down. We arrived a bit after 10pm and got checked in. Miss P immediately liked our room and began jumping on the king sized bed. The room was big and elegant and had a view of the city. Hubby left to grab some food and Miss P and I checked out our surroundings aka we found the remote and turned on cartoons. Hubs brought back Mediterranean food which was tasty and heavy. I could already feel the calories adding up on my butt. The bed was surprisingly comfy and the pillows even more so, so I was able to get a good nights rest. Well, I did wake up for a bit but I can't help that. While I was up I researched breakfast spots. The one I kept coming back to and which was fairly close was a donut shop with 4.5 stars on Yelp. Everyone awoke around 7pm (thanks Miss P) and so we started down to the donut shop for the opening. The Yelpers said to get there early as it was quite the hot spot. I thought we would avoid the line if we got there when it open but boy was I wrong. We got there 10 mins after opening and the line was out the door and around the corner. We waited about 45 minutes but it was a fun wait. The Chef came out and gave free Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle donuts to all the kids waiting in line and then he spoke quite a bit. He seemed humbled by all of the attention his donuts had gotten and thanked everyone for coming out that morning. When we got inside the shop my mouth was watering. There were so many good options. Of course, true to form hubby orders the best thing on the menu. I don't know how he does it, but he does it time and time again. This time he ordered the French Toast Donut which they warm up and serve with a side of butter syrup, and blueberries. Miss P took one look and sat in Dad's lap. Hubs didn't know he would be sharing that donut. I was able to get one bite and would have had more but he already had one person incroaching on his breakfast. We took our 3 donuts and homemade strawberry milk upstairs to the "bar" area which meant comfy chairs with built in tables and a lot of 80's music. We had a good time eating our food and had a surprising fun experience. After breakfast we headed to Balboa Park aka home to all the museums and the zoo. We hit up a playground where Miss P had fun climbing, swimming and jumping for an hour. The playground was near the Science Museum so we went there next as we heard it was a great hands on museum. We did enjoy the Circus Exhibit, the Kid's Zone and other science like experiments. The highlight for me was the the huge IMAX movie on space. It was the best IMAX experience I ever had I think! The museum was small so it didn't take long to go through. When we were done we went back to the hotel to find lunch. We ask the concierge about some recommendations saying we didn't want to go to a chain place. You know what she recommends? Tender Greens, a chain. Anyhow she gave us a card for another restaurant but I just went on Yelp and I ended up finding Saltbox. When we got there it looked like it was more like a nightclub. We looked at the menu and it looked good and there was no one inside which meant Miss P could be as loud as she wanted so it was a no brainer to sit down. The waitress was accommodating and hooked us up with happy hour drinks and food and got Miss P some scrambled eggs. Hubs of course got the best drink and so I wanted one myself and ordered a second drink. I was pretty tipsy. I rarely drink anymore so I don't think I can tolerate alcohol anymore. We spent a long time at the restaurant so by the time we went back to the hotel I was back to myself again. We all took a nap and then it was off to the pool for a swim. Dad took P in for a swim. it was pretty windy and cold and I had my fancy undo so I stayed out. When we got back to the room we got ready for dinner. Hubs made reservations at a sushi place. We decided to walk and it turned out to be over a mile so we got our evening exercise in for sure. The sushi was amazing. P had her first mocha. Apparently she likes chocolate in any form. Ha

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
