I Was Totally That Lady!

Drove up to Big Bear yesterday to have some fun in the snow with our neighbors. We thought it may be fun to teach our 3 year olds how to ski. $300 later we found out that 3 year olds don't like to ski (at least our two 3 year olds). In our case, Penny is OCD about clothing. She got those ski boots on and wasn't able to get over the tight feeling. She cried and cried and latest about 10 minutes on the skis. I was able to get her back on them a few hours later and pull her around for another 10 minutes. But, basically, she and her friend, Olivia, had fun playing in the snow. Who wouldn't at 3? I actually think she would have liked skiing if it wasn't for the shoes. She is pretty daring and loves the outdoor. But alas, skiing does take a bit of skill/coordination which I remembered when I went down the bunny hill screaming my head off. After 20 years away from skiing, one doesn't always remember how to ski gracefully down a hill. Basically, I couldn't remember how to stop (pizza slice, pizza slice) and since the last time I went skiing there are a ton of annoying snowboarders everywhere, it was like a friggin' human obstacle course! I didn't want to hit one of them so I made myself fall. Then I could't remember how to get up. This older lady of a ski instructor came over and was giving me directions but I am not so good with verbal instructions so she was getting annoyed with me. Finally, she said the magic words "If you get stuck and can't get up just take the boot off the ski." Duh. Well, she didn't say "duh" but I felt like she said that in her head. I could have gave up, I was after all, that embarrassing lady going down the hill, that Goldie Hawn character from the movie "Bird on Wire" who screamed her head off to Mel Gibson after finding a cockroach in the shower...but I felt like I needed to conquer my fear. Plus, for once in my life I wanted to be athletic. So I made myself go down the hill two more times. I must say, I improved and I would have gone more but I felt bad having my neighbor watch my daughter, so I returned to watch Penny and let hubby go for a few runs. A few hours went by before he returned. I had fun playing with the girls in the snow and then some other friends of mine who were in town showed up. We had a quick catch up with them and took some photos as my friend, Miguel has never been to snow before (Boy, did he ever get an introduction, courtesy of a snow storm on Sunday). Our trip to Big Bear was a quick 24 hour one but it was just enough for us non-snow people. I know you are thinking that I am from Michigan but alas, after being in LA for almost 20 years, I have turned into a cold wuss. After skiing we grabbed some pizza with our friends and then headed back to LA before a big snow storm hit. It was actually pounding snow as we drove down the mountain. We went from Snow, to fog, to rain to perfection of our neighborhood all in a course of 2 hours.

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
