Exhausting!

Traveling with a 2.5 year old is exhausting! Mainly because our toddler does not run out of steam. Although there were a few days on this vacation where she just passed out and didn't wake up for a good couple of hours. We decided to be lazy Thursday morning. We stayed a little longer in bed and got in some ocean and pool time before heading down south to the Maui Ocean Center aka a big aquarium. Once again Penny made a friend, Jude, who I think reminded her of Logan and they were inseparable for a while.
I am not sure if the boy was sick or had a breathing problem but his mom kept asking him to slow down. I could tell that they weren't tourist but rather locals. The boy wasn't slowing down and when we turned our heads she ran off with the boy. Penny was good and confused and tried looking for the boy and we would have helped her but the mom obviously didn't want her son by Penny any longer so we told her we went away. It took a second but she seemed fine. There were a lot of great fish displays. They even had turtles and a few came to say hi to me so that was cool.
They had a big shark exhibit We enjoyed our time at the Ocean Center. It isn't too big but the exhibits where pretty cool and interactive. We got through the place in an hour and a half. They had the largest gift shop I have ever seen! Luckily, we got out without buying anything! Afterward we stopped to have lunch at the Seascape Ma'alaea Restaurant which was inside the Ocean Center. The food was okay, nothing that I had to return to but it did have a pretty good view and a nice breeze as a plus.
The waitress was super nice to Penny and Penny took her playfulness in. Penny must have been hungry as she ate a whole plate of pasta! With lunch over we drove back to Lahaina which took about an hour. We stopped on Front Street to do a bit of walking. We decided to try shaved ice. We had always heard about Ululani's but had never tried it. All you need to know about this place is that their shaved ice is the BOMB! YOU WILL MISS OUT IF YOU DON'T TRY IT!!! Their shaved ice is truly the best, the snow is so fine and light and fluffy. It just melts in your mouth. Add the juice and your are in heaven!!! So if you are ever in Hawaii, wait in the line. It's totally worth it. I was going to order sugar free because I am diabetic and the lady asked me if I was sure. She said no pressure but she explained that all of the juices are made from real fruit. Unfortunately, the non-sugar juices are made with aspartame and are thus not real. I try not to do aspartame at all so I decided to go with the regular. The lady saw my concerned and said don't worry I won't pour as much juice on yours. She was quick to tell me I was welcome to skip the line and come back if I felt I needed more juice. Well, I didn't need to do that as it was perfect as and it left me craving another! Yes, its really that good. May I suggest Pink Lemonade and Sour Apple as the perfect sweet/sour treat! Just plain exhausted, we decided to stay at the hotel for dinner, so we went downstairs to check out the restaurant overlooking the ocean and it was packed!! The host told us to take a seat anywhere so we did and another waiter yelled at us and said that the area we choose was closed. So we moved back into the busy dining room and took the last table. It was a high top which made it interesting with a toddler but we ordered and eat as much as we could until Penny got antsy.

Buffalo Wild Wings

When I was going to Michigan State University, my friends and I would always go to BW3's for hot wings. They always had a variety of flavored wings from Honey BBQ to steaming hot, hot, death wings. Wings and a beer were just the thing to satisfy a busy student's appetite. When we frequented BW3's it was a dive bar but by the time my brother graduated from MSU they swapped locations for a building across the street and turned the name to Buffalo Wild Wings and the restaurant became more like a chain thing. Well, color me shocked the other day when we went to the movies and I saw a Buffalo Wild Wings being built in the AMC Burbank 16 complex. Apparently, after looking on their website they are one of the fastest top 10 chains in the US. So of course I had to introduce the hubby to one of my favorite college treats. I don't think he is so much a fan of chicken wings so we got boneless chicken wings a.k.a. tasty little chicken chunks in two of the flavored sauc...

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

The Lost Art of Letter Writing

This week I was the recepient of two postcards. In the age of e-mailing and blogging this is a rare occurrrance. It's not that people don't write anymore it's just they are doing it in different forms and I think in less personal forms. It's kinda sad when you think about it. For me, there is nothing better then getting a hand written letter in the mail because it means someone was specifically thinking about you. Writing a letter these days takes a lot of effort when GMail is so near. I mean a person has to pick out stationary (if they even have any on hand), find time to sit down and compose a letter (and who has a spare half hour these days?), find or buy a stamp and actually walk the letter to the mailbox. With all this effort, no wonder people email these days! My girlfriend Becky and I joke that the United States Postal Service has become "Snail Mail." Most times before a letter gets to us these days we already know the information inside ...
