Hubby's "Alice in Wonderland" 35th Birthday Cake

THE INSPIRATION:

THE REALITY:

I never in my life thought that I could possibly make a cake like you see on TV, like on one of those "Ace of Cake" shows but it just goes to show you if you make up your mind to do something, anything is possible. So thus, you have this 8 layer birthday cake for hubby's 35th birthday aka "The Reality." I owe a big, big word of thanks to my girlfriend, Kristy, who helped me tackle this beheamoth. She is an avid baker and better yet, she has a good friend who used to work in a bakery that she consulted for advice. With both her and her friend's advice in place, I was able to buy all the ingredients (and pans) needed to make this birthday cake. My second set of instructions after purchasing all the materials was to bake all 8 cakes. So I baked them and stuck them in the freezer. Apparently cake is a lot easier to handle and frost when its frozen. Kristy came over and we spent 6 hours decorating the cake. There were some sticky moments as we had no idea what we were doing but alas, I think it turned out pretty good for two amatuers!! All I can say, is thank goodness I bought some figurines from the Disney store as I am not sure we could have made all the figures out of fondant!! I have to say when all was said and done it was sure fun to make!!!! A great creative outlet!

Here is a run down:

6 boxes of cake mix
2x 12 inch cakes (chocolate) made up the bottom
3x 9 inch cakes (yellw butter) made up the middle
3x 6 inch cakes (funfetti) made up the top
used 6 pounds of powedered sugar
Bought 2.5 pounds of pre-made fondant (which made the table cloth, balls, flowers, tea cups, teapot and other sculpted items)
Made 2 batches of liquid fondant (covered the bottom and middle layers)
Used the cream cheese Sprinkles frosting recipe to make the frosting in between the layers
4x 12 inch wooden dowls to keep the cake in place
A ton of creativity

= 5 minutes for the birthday boy to cut into and serve up to 40 people!!

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of ...

My Favorite Gourmet Trucks

As of last night, I have now tried 18 food trucks! Only 60 more to go! My friends, Krueger and Kristy joined me at 55 Degree Wine in Atwar Village to try the always busy Grilled Cheese Truck! I have run into the truck a few times now but something has always prevented me from trying their food. Mostly the really, really long lines!! This time the hour wait wasn't so bad with two girls to gossip with. By the time we got to the front we were ready to execute our food plan. Kristy took lead and placed an order for 3 sandwiches (the brie, the mac-n-cheese and the rib meat) plus the dessert sandwich and some tator tots!!! I was a bit bummed that they didn't have the sandwich I went for, the Harvest sandwich but the 3 sandwiches we got more than made up for everything. I was glad to try this truck with 2 girls because we split the sandiches in 3rds which was awesome because I got to try a variety of their sandwiches. Now I must add the Grilled Cheese Truck to my list of fa...

Surfing Goat Diary

We left the store and headed to the Surfing Goat Diary, again, this was a second trip for us but what was different this time is that we scheduled an hour long tour. Last time we arrive right before closing and were rushed. We spent a fair amount of time there exploring before the tour. We tried their cheesecake, we met the cats and dogs that roamed the place, we played in the playground, we pet and fed the baby goats that were penned up, and pursued the little store. Penny was eager to get her hands on the chocolate goat milk truffles. I must admit they did look good. I had my eyes on a t-shirt and a mug. Our tour started at 3:30pm that day and we met all the goats and learned all about the farm. But the most exciting part of the tour was getting the opportunity to milk the goats. Penny was quite a good milker. A friend later reminded me that Penny was breastfed (wink, wink). By the time the tour ended we were extremely hot. Maui was hot but also humid. We were ready to...
