Open Sesame

One of the million planned things I had scheduled for my parents' visit was a trip to the Magic Castle located in Hollywood. Here is a description.

The Magic Castle is the world's most famous club for magicians and magic enthusiasts and home to The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. The Magic Castle is the showplace for some of the greatest magicians from around the globe. We also take great pride in showcasing the magnificent building that houses the Magic Castle. Built in 1908, this storied mansion has watched Hollywood grow and change for almost 100 years while never losing its original charm.

The Magic Castle is another one of those exclusive places that is only open to members only and to their guests. My Club 33 contact is also a member at the Magic Castle. He had been asking me for years if I wanted to go and for some reason or another I couldn't. When my parents came the Magic Castle thing popped in my head and luckily I was able to get in for a brunch during their visit. I hear the dinners are the time to go but they were all filled up.

I really had no idea what the Magic Castle was all about until I looked at the website for the dress code for brunch. I continued reading and had a good feeling we were in for a real treat!

So this past Sunday, we drove to the Magic Castle. Valeted the car and waited outside the castle with a group of little girls. Apparently, they let kids in during the brunch hours, otherwise, it is 21 and older for the rest of the time. The little girls were celebrating a birthday. There was this one pretty little girl with long dark hair that took a shining to my hubby. She stared at him and smiled and my hub, being the goofball that he is stared back and made faces. The little girl had something about her. There was some kind of charisma. If anyone who was waiting to get into the castle was going to be a super star one day, it would be her.

Once we got inside we checked in and the hostess told us to whisper something to the wall. So we did and the wall opened and let us into a hallway. It was very Harry Potter-ish. Once we walked through the hall it opened to a grand bar. Brian and I immediately ordered Jack-n-Cokes once we saw all the little girls huddling around the lobby. Then we found our way to a waiting room with a piano that was played by a ghost. The ghost took requests. All we had to do was say a title of a song and the ghost would play it. She even knew ColdPlay's Clocks. As if that wasn't awesome we wandered around some more and found even more bars. The hub and I definately want to go back for dinner and have fun drinking at all the various bars. From what we heard magicians are roaming around and pull you aside to practise their tricks on you.

Before eating, we had time to see a show by one of the youngsters studying at the academy. We were in a 20 seat room all nice and cozy to watch the show. Aside from the annoying little girls who kept saying "I know this trick" (poor magician kid) it was a fun show. The hub and the girl stared some more at each other and made faces. The show lasted 15 mins and during that time we saw a rope trick being performed by a 20 year-old magician. He was pretty good despite the heckling fromt he girls.

Brunch was upstairs and they had plenty of food to keep a person going energy wise all day long. Our waiter at the end of brunch gave us tickets to a 30-minute show. The show was oriented toward families and kids but it was still fun. Apparently Magicians come from all around the world so you are likely never to see the same person there that often. We saw a thrid show as well. I was amazed at the various size rooms they had. They were made for all types of crowds.

We were there for about 4 hours in total and it was really fun. I was thinking of taking Brian there for his birthday prior to my parents coming and our visit confirmed he liked it. So maybe if we can ever find a day to celebrate in December (as he has one of those Christmasy birthday's where you get screwed) maybe we shall celebrate there.

Behind Door Number One

Have you ever watched those TV Game shows where they have a couple of doors and behind one is a grand prize? Well, this weekend the hub and I found out what was behind our Door #1. The hubby and I are starting the beginning phases of landscaping our backyard. Our first step, was to clean out the area behind our garage. When we moved in, there was about 2 feet of walking space behind our garage the rest of the area was covered in vines. Vines were growing on the roof and generally it was a mess. Not wanting the vines to take over the roof, we I started to clear out the vines last fall. But after we cut a million vines with only a pair of clippers we gave up and decided to clean out the rest in the spring. Spring came around and we didn't do much until one day when I was sick a few weeks ago, I ran into our gardener. I showed him the mess and asked if he knew of anyone who could come clean it out. I could tell he was actually, quite happy for me to broach the subject of
