Yes, I am writing a blog about the new Kevin Costner movie. You know, he makes one movie called WaterWorld, which by the way was a success commercially even if the idea wasn't and he is a target for making crap movies. He makes as many crap movies as the next guy so I say what's the big deal? Anyhoo, I have always liked Kevin Costner. He seems like a down-to-earth guy. Somebody you could hang out with and have a beer with in real life. He is one person, if I saw at a wedding, I wouldn't be afraid to ask for a dance.
With that being said, when I got free screening tickets to "Swing Vote" I wanted to see what Kevin was up to. I saw the trailer a while back and I was thinking that perhaps this might be another "Tin Cup" but since the tickets were free I decided it was worth my time to go see this film...even if it turned out to be a "Tin Cup." I have been watching action heroes all summer and just wanted to see a good cheesy, popcorn flick.
So I did and you know, I really, really, really liked it's message. All Americans should go see this movie before the elections in November. I am really serious about this. There is one line in the film that really got to me. Kevin's character is reading a "Fan" letter to the two presidential candidates and asks "How can I live in the richest country in the world but I can barely afford to live here."
When I was a teenager, I was gunhoe about voting. Like the little girl in the movie I thought it was my duty to vote. But over the years, I have slacked. I voted for Gore and I voted for Arnold because I felt they could make a difference. I felt like my vote counted and was contributing to the greater good. Then Bush got elected, I really don't know how but I kinda stopped voting these past years. I couldn't figure out how this man got elected.
The problem with America (and me) which this little movie remind me about was that people don't vote anymore. We, as Americans have become disenchanted with politics and I don't think people feel like their vote counts anymore. When people get disenchanted then it opens the possibility for people like Bush to get elected. So its our fault really. We were given a unique power by our forefathers and we are screwing it up. The little girl in the movie reads her powerful essay at school stating that great nations have been doomed because history tends to repeat itself. She begs her classroom not to destroy this nation by repeating history. Somehow, this childlike idealism has been put on the back burner for most adults. We need to remember, that we can indeed, change the world. Remember the Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks from our school books? What happened to people who cared and stood up for what they believed in?
Like the earthquake that inspired me to get an emergency plan into action, I feel like this movie has inspired me to vote again. I am sick and tired of the direction this country is going. We are the greatest nation on earth but I feel like we have to prove that to everyone. People do have a lot of opportunity in this country. That is why so many people from Mexico come here. They realize how good we got it and want to be part of it. We are at fault for letting this country go awry from the ideals it was built on.
Michael Moore can complain about health care but people, we are not going to get free healthcare like the French if we don't make an effort to get it. Do you think women won the right to vote because they complained about it? No, they went out and did something about it. Changing the world is hard work and people, it's time to start putting the effort back in and we can start by voting. We can continue to complain that this country is going to h-e-doublehockeysticks but nothing is going to change unless everyone remembers that all votes count and that everyone makes a difference. I truly believe there is good and bad in this world and that the good wins out because people are doing little things that sways the good meter to their side. Well people, the same applies to politics. Hitler got into power because he preyed on people's fears. If we, as voters, stop voting because we fear our vote doesn't count, then we lose in the end.
Go see this movie. It isn't an Oscar contender but hopefully, the movie's message will "Swing" you into deciding to vote this November. We need to take action people. Get inspired by this popcorn movie that means well. When people are dying overseas fighting for this country so that we can be charge a zillion dollars for a gallon of gas and when our own leaders forget about the entire state of New Orleans because oh, they are aren't rich oil barrens then there is something rotten in the state of politics. People, it's time to throw the rotten tomatoes out and get something fresh. Who that fresh is, well, that is your right to decide. Get out and see this movie, pick up a paper and try and learn about what is going on in the world. We became the land of opportunity because people fought really, really, hard for it. Men and Women are fighting in Iraq so you have the opportunity to buy a $5 glass of coffee. Don't let those soldiers and those people who stood up for liberty down. Go make your vote count!
