Labor Day is the celebration of the value and dignity of work, and its role in the American way of life. As the Industrial Revolution took hold of the nation, the average American in the late 1800s worked 12-hour days, seven days a week in order to make a basic living. Children were also working, as they provided cheap labor to employers and laws against child labor were not strongly enforced. With the long hours and terrible working conditions, American unions became more prominent and voiced their demands for a better way of life. On Tuesday September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first-ever Labor Day parade. Participants took an upaid day-off to honor the workers of America, as well as vocalize issues they had with employers. As years passed, more states began to hold these parades, but Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later.
Just in case you guys forgot why we have this national holiday I just wanted to post a little reminder. Is it me or do we need to have to have another little vocalization? I think its time for American workers to unite for a higher minimum wage and while we are at it, mandatory 3-week holiday for all! Us American's work too hard. Blackberries are supposed to make life easier but all they do is extend the amount of hours we work. Sneeky little bastards! We need to take a que from the traveling Europeans, Latin Americans and even those Aussie's and get ourselves more vacation!
Anyhoo, I am glad to be working. I get the distinct impression that it's really hard out there. I recently was given approval by my employer to hire a person to help me. I interviewed about 20 people and one of my closing questions is to ask "Where do you see yourself in 5-years?" In my past interviewing history people would usually tell me some elaborate dream or goal to run the world but not one of the 20 people I interviewed had a dream. They all said they saw themselves "in a stable job or stable work environment." They didn't even say "I see myself moving up the latter or taking over the company. What's going on out there? No one has dreams or goals anymore? It's sad state of affairs in America when people say I just want a steady job. Isn't this the land of opportunity?
I had one person who was making a shit ton of money in another field and they were willing to accept our salary just to have a job. I can tell you it was a lot less then they made previously but I could hear the desperation in their voice. They just wanted a job and they were willing to sign a contract saying they would stay on for a while. They didn't seem to care what they were doing as long as they had that steady income. I even had a VP of a company ask if they could interview. Ummm, a little over qualified and there is no way I can meet their former salary.
What is going on in our country? Gas is the most expensive it's ever been, people are willing to take any kind of job to have a job and it's friggin expensive to go grocery shopping! I was lucky to get a raise a few weeks ago but I don't think other people are getting raises and my raise while I am happy to get it doesn't match the increasing costs of living in America.
What is the solution? I am telling you, we really have to pay attention in this election and vote for the guy who I going to do the best for our country cuz right now, people's dreams have been replaced by the need for steady work and that's sad.
