So for those of you dying to know, the first movie club event was a success! The hub themed his food around comfort food a.k.a. food that mom would cook if you were coming back from Vietnam (fried chicken bites with dipping sauces, cold macaroni and cheese squares, chili cheese fries and mini meatloaf on cracker bites). I decided to add some fruit into the mix and cut up a bunch of oranges from our tree in the back yard.
After a few hours of catching up with friends over food and beers we found out the latest. Did you guys know Jung is moving to Vegas! Yep, at the end of May he departs California for the the suburbs of Vegas to rent a house? It also seems that the Bosgul are going to jump out of a plane to get married (ok, I am not sure if this will really happen but it was discussed - with the "Gul" part of the the duo voting yes and "Bos" voting no way). I so want to plan a Chapstick themed wedding shower for them when they decide for sure (see the bride is very fond of Chapstick). Montez is saving the environment by walking everywhere and he has informed us that this week he loves his job. Matt and Michele are going to take a mini vacation next weekend to wine country and they plan to buy iPhones with their George Bush money. Nat who didn't come due to job woes (her employers doesn't feel the need to pay the girl overtime) is moving out. No more Big Love for Matt. Or maybe? She is moving into the apartment next to them.
I signed up people for the next few months (except May, which is too busy for everyone) so hopefully, the movie night will continue. We even have a drive-in adventure planned in August. Michele is the next to host in June and then Jung (in his new Vegas Pad) over the 4th.
The first movie night film we watched was a MGM flick called COMING HOME. It was released in 1978 and stars Jane Fonda, Jon Voight, and Bruce Dern. Here is a short synopsis in case you would like to rent this video at home. Sally Bender is the wife of a Captain in the United States Army. He is sent over to Vietnam, and Sally is alone. With nothing else to do, she decides to volunteer at a local veteran's hospital, where she meets Luke, who went to high school with Sally. Luke was wounded and is paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. When Sally begins to fall in love with Luke, she has to make a crucial decision about her life.
The movie for me started off slow but then I got into it and it was really good. I was totally surprised by this film as I thought it was going to be one thing and it turned out to be a love story. I really enjoyed the acting in the film and I must say that Jon Voight looked alot like my sexy hubby so that was a bonus. I am so used to watching films with today's actors it was good to go back and watch these actors in their younger days. I also enjoyed the style of filmmaking and see all the great old mustangs.
This film really made me think because basically this married woman has an affair. Personally, I think once you make a commitment to a person it's not ok to fool around even if times are rough. Sure her hubby was at war but the vows do say "for better or worse." Where I felt conflicted was the fact that I didn't really like her husband (Bruce Dern)and the Luke guy (Jon Voight) was totally cool and I felt like she was more true to herself when she was with him then with her husband.
The film ended and I still didn't know what I would do if I was her nor did I ever figure out if she made the right choice. I did like how the film ended because I guess each person could take away something different depending on how they felt. I guess for me the theme of the film was, you never know what you will be tempted to do until you are in that situation. You may believe something is wrong but then I guess you might encounter a situation where what you thought was right isn't right anymore.
Anyhoo, good film. I like movies that have something to say and try to get the viewer to have an opinion. I wonder what the next film will be?
